As you’ve probably seen me post on social media lately, I’m hungry. Ha. Just kidding. I’ve spent the month of January tackling my second attempt at the Whole 30! I tried to do it abut a year ago and only made it five days. This time I am determined to make it the entire 30 days. My primary goal in doing the Whole30 was to find easy, flavorful recipes that our whole family would love. It’s been quite an adjustment for Noah, who is a Goldfish, cookie, and fruit snack addict. (He and I definitely share a love of homemade chocolate chip cookies)! ? However, I’m really pleased with the progress we’ve made and its kept me motivated to continue the hunt for more easy, healthy, delicious recipes! (I mean, he ate half a bag of steamed broccoli the other night – that’s a parenting win if I ever did see one)! I didn’t want to restrict Noah to a Whole30 diet (just something I wasn’t personally comfortable with), so I would say that the most difficult part of my Whole30 was preparing non-compliant foods for him! Here are my tips for surviving a Whole30 with kids!READ MORE
Winter Sensory Activities
Things have been really hectic around our house lately (more to come on that), so I haven’t had much time to focus on creating new activities for the boys. However, these three winter sensory activities were so quick and easy to pull together! I love giving Noah the opportunity to explore new items through sensory play. It gives us a great opportunity to introduce new vocabulary and topics. He’s loved this Winter themed sensory bin! Most of all, he loves the animals in it!
Winter Sensory Bin
Here’s what I included in our Winter themed sensory bin:
Sand Sensory Bin
We had snow here last night and it is cold outside! I love being able to watch the snow fall from inside this time of year, but with it getting colder outside, what better time to bring some warm weather fun inside?! A sand sensory bin is a really fun way to play in the sand year round! Here are five ideas for fun ways to use kinetic sand indoors. Of course, I keep our sand in a bin with the lid on and pop it into our sensory table when we are ready to play!
Dinosaur Dig
One way that we love playing with kinetic sand is with dinosaurs. I recently picked up a dinosaur dig puzzle kit and we’ve had so much fun with it! I bury the dinosaur “bones” in the sand and Noah uses the tools to dig them up. He still needs me to put the puzzle together for him at the end, but then he loves to play in the sand with the finished dinosaur. If you are feeling really creative, here’s a fun post about creating your own dinosaur fossils!
Create a Beach
Another way that we use our kinetic sand is when talking about different ocean animals. Early in the summer, you can often find miniature sand castle molds. (I picked mine up at Michael’s). Noah loves instructing me to build the castles so that he can “mash them down” with his ocean animals. He’s a toddler boy, what can I say. I have learned through his “mashing castle phase” that kinetic sand is far better to have inside than real sand because it sticks together, so its much easier to clean up! We even use things like measuring spoons and cups to build sand castles! Different sizes of measuring cups are a great way to build tiered castles.
Cookie Cutter Shapes
A third way to enjoy your sand sensory bin is by using cookie cutters to make outlines in the sand. You could use letters, shapes, or a fun theme of cookie cutters. No surprise here, we used trucks! This would be a great way to encourage kids to learn letters! I happen to have a set of alphabet cookie cutters, but if you don’t, just draw the letters in the sand with your finger and let your kids copy or trace over it.
Treasure Hunt
Another fun way to play in the sand is to create a treasure hunt! I hide the mini Thomas trains in the sand and then Noah digs for them. (We do the same thing in our beans bin). He gets excited about digging for treasure!
Shapes, Numbers, and Alphabet Tracing
This one really couldn’t be more simple. Just draw a shape, number, or letter with your finger. You can either have them copy it or have them trace it with their finger! We’ve recently started doing this with Noah’s name too so that he starts to recognize the letters in his name!
How to Create a Functional Entry in a Small Space
One of the things that I’ve struggled most with in our house is how to create a functional entry in a small space! I love the mudrooms that I see on HGTV with the benches and locker style cabinetry for coats and shoes. My dream house would definitely include a huge mudroom area! (Is that a sign of getting old – when your criteria for your dream house includes a big mudroom and laundry room?!).
Now that we have kids, which means a lot more stuff, I’ve come to realize just how poorly our house is laid out in terms of storage space on the main floor! Our garage door and front door both open to the same small entry space. There is just never enough room for coats, shoes, and bags!
After our home remodel earlier this year, I really focused on our entry. I needed to convert that small, disorganized space in to something pretty but very functional. My list of criteria included bins for each family member, a place to sit to put shoes on, and a place for keys and our dog’s leash.
We have two small (and I mean small) coat closets. I found Elf storage units with slide out drawers at the Container Store that fit perfectly on the floor of each closet. They are very sturdy with a nice top on them (perfect for storing diaper bags on top)!. We got enough drawers that each person in the family has their own drawer for shoes, hats, mittens, and scarves. The dog even has a bin!
For storage of small items that we use frequently, like keys and the dog leash, I decided to make over a small table that was once in our kitchen. It was a boring cream color and was looking a little worn. Our house has a lot of neutral colors, so I decided that for the entry I really wanted a bold pop of color. Bold pop of color is definitely what we got and I love it! It was a super quick makeover – a light sanding and two coats of paint! One day’s work and our entry was completely transformed. I placed a pretty, white chair in the corner to give us and our guests a place to sit to put shoes on, and the entry makeover was complete! Have a look at the before and after:
Having bins designated for each family member has really been a lifesaver. As I’ve said before, it’s so important when trying to keep a home organized that items have a home. This gives all of those things that collect in the entry a home in the same area where they usually are left. That makes it super quick to pick up shoes at the end of the day! (Will they ever learn to put their own shoes away?!) Sigh. A momma can dream, right? 🙂
To break it down into easy steps, here’s how to get your own small entry space organized! (I suppose this concept would work for a big mudroom too).
- List your must haves in terms of functionality for your space. For me it was a place to sit, a convenient area to store keys, and a shoe bin for each person in our family. Then, keep your focus on making sure those must haves are met.
- Add color to make the tiny area pop. Stick with one bold color. Too many will overwhelm a small space.
- Add a fun, unique piece to the space. I decided to incorporate a really unique, neutral wood mirror to make the space feel a little bigger and add something interesting to look at.
- Use every inch of space that you have! Add bins to the floor of a closet, baskets to shelves on top, or even a small shelf with a cute, tiny basket hanging on the wall to store keys!
Keeping Childhood Memories Organized
**This is not a sponsored post. When I find something that I love to use, I love to share it with all of you! This is one of those things. 🙂 **
I have struggled for a long time with keeping childhood memories organized for Noah and now Liam. Noah says probably a hundred hilarious things every day and I have countless videos and pictures of the boys! I love sharing their cute moments and milestones with my family as well. My brothers all live far away but they love seeing what their little nephews are up to! Today I’m sharing my favorite way to keep it all organized in a place that can be easily shared! I can’t even count how many different apps and sites I tried before landing on this one. So here goes….my favorite app for keeping childhood memories organized is called Notabli.
How to Organize Mail Clutter
One of the areas I struggle with the most in our house is how to organize mail clutter. Every day when my husband gets the mail, it just gets left on the kitchen counter or table. Over the years, I’ve tried many different ways of organizing our mail. I put a table with mail slots in our entry. The mail never made it to the entry (my hubby always goes out our back door to walk to the community mailbox). I put bins upstairs in our office so that we could file mail immediately as it came in. In reality, nothing got filed immediately. Wishful thinking. The problem was that I was creating a ‘home’ for our mail in all the wrong places. It finally occurred to me that the only way a mail organization system would work was if I placed it in the area where the mail was constantly left out. READ MORE
The Perfect Daily Planner
Hi! I am so excited to share this post with you! When I decided to leave my job, I started the hunt for a planner to keep our life organized. After a great deal of research and trying a few different planners, I finally found the perfect daily planner! Its the Simplified Daily Planner by Emily Ley. I’ve been using it for a year now and just ordered my 2017 planner! In one years time, this has gone from a planner I’d never heard of to me sitting in the parking lot of preschool drop off ordering my 2017 planner the SECOND they went on sale. I love it that much. Christmas Traditions with Kids
I love traditions. Some of my favorite memories are the Christmas traditions that our family does year after year. Today I’m sharing with you three of my favorite Christmas traditions with kids!
The first tradition, which is a new one to us, was inspired by my dear friend and neighbor. Each year at Christmas time, we do a handprint on our tree skirt. I started at one end and label each print with the year. Noah’s handprints are done in green paint and Liam’s will be done in red! Over time, we will end up with a tree skirt of their growing handprints from year to year. I know this is something that I will treasure forever as my boys keep growing! It’s already fun to compare Noah’s handprint from his first Christmas to now. It makes me a little sad to be reminded of how fast they grow, but I’m so glad I have a print of his teeny tiny hand!
The second tradition that I love at Christmas is our Christmas Eve family dinner. Rather than doing a formal dinner where one person (Mom) does all of the work, we all get in the kitchen together and have fun! Each person picks an appetizer to make. We play Christmas music in the background and the kitchen is sheer madness, but man, do we have fun! We then fill our plates with our appetizers and eat together before opening gifts. This works great with little ones who are just too excited to eat before presents because they can come back and graze later! (Same kitchen, just pre-renovation if you’re curious!).
The third tradition that I love at Christmas is giving our boys each a pair of cute Christmas pajamas (I’m currently obsessed with the pjs from Hanna Andersson), warm socks, and a Christmas movie. It’s so nice during the holidays to just take a couple hours to cuddle up as a family and watch a movie. Just to stop and be together.
What are your family’s traditions that you cherish?
Christmas Decorating
One of my favorite things about Christmas decorating is how cozy the house feels when all of the decorations and lights are up. I just want to light the fireplace, grab a cozy blanket, and sit in quiet looking at the tree. (Not that it ever happens, just saying, I’d like that)! This year, my decorating was really pretty simple. I did my normal mantle decorations, the tree, and the EASIEST table decorations ever. Remember my Fall tablescape? Here’s how I swapped it out in under 5 minutes for Christmas! I swapped out the Fall leaves in the centerpiece for mini trees from the dollar bin at Target. I also swapped out the painted pears for pieces of greenery and laid my plaid fabric a different direction. Done! Seriously – 5 minute swap. Doesn’t get any better than that when you’ve got a 2 year old “helping” you decorate!
When I’m choosing decorations for holidays, I like to plan them around some of my mainstay pieces so that decorating for each holiday isn’t much work. For my mantle, I always have the black framed mirror and my white distressed candle holders. Then I add in a flower or greenery accent appropriate for the season. Here’s my mantle for Christmas!
Continuing the theme of easy decorating swaps, I did the same thing with my display corner in the kitchen. I printed an art piece that I purchased from Etsy, put it in the black frame, and added my white Santa sign. Pretty easy decorating!
What’s your favorite Christmas decoration?
